The Alpine Public
Library greatly appreciates the outstanding support of our community. Most
public libraries in the United States are operated by local governments, which
provide almost all of the funding required for their operation. Both Brewster
County and the City of Alpine provide invaluable support, but in 2013 their
combined contributions provided only 37% of the funds needed to keep the library
doors open. For 2014, Brewster County reduced their support to APL by almost
half, meaning that over 70% of our operating budget must come from other
sources.
The Alpine Public
Library, in contrast, is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. This
means that in the eyes of the IRS, APL is a charity, and all your
donations are tax-deductible.
In 2013, APL was named
one of the best small libraries in America by the Bill & Melinda Gates
Foundation and Library Journal.
